The Daxuan School’s curriculum, compiled into a single volume

BaZi (八字, ‘the eight characters’), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is the Chinese art of interpreting a person’s life based on the moment of their birth. The year, month, day and hour form four pillars, each consisting of a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. This makes eight characters, which describe a person’s character, their strengths and weaknesses, their relationships, their health, their relationship with money and work, as well as the major periods of their life. BaZi does not predict a fixed destiny. It reveals a mandate – that is to say, a potential to be understood and realised.

It is a demanding art. One must master the five elements, the heavenly stems and earthly branches, the hidden stems, the strength of the Day Master, the Ten Gods, the relationships between the characters, the pillars of fortune and the twelve stages of Qi. Above all, one must know how to interconnect all these layers. This handbook brings together in a single 271-page volume, in French, the complete teaching of Serge Augier’s BaZi course (Ba Men Da Xuan), from the first to the fifth year. It faithfully follows the order of the lessons.

A new edition, focused on teaching

This new version is built entirely around Serge Augier’s course. It does not cite any other authors nor refer to any other sources. Useful supplementary explanations have been retained, but they are incorporated without external references into ‘Supplement’ boxes that extend the course without interrupting it. These boxes cover, for example, the calculation of the Four Pillars, the age of entry into the Pillars of Luck, the family deities, and special structures.

The reader thus has in their hands a cohesive work that speaks with a single voice: that of the course they are following.

      What the textbook contains

      • Part I — The Basics: the palaces, Yin-Yang and the five elements, the ten heavenly stems, the twelve earthly branches, the hidden stems, the strength of the Day Master, the pillars of fortune, the five factors, the ten gods, combinations and clashes, good and bad pillars, and the twelve stages of Qi.
      • Part II — The Sixty Jiazi and the Na Yin: the sixty Day Pillars described one by one, for each of the ten Heavenly Stems, followed by the Na Yin, the melodic element.
      • Part III — The Gods and the Five Aspects: relationships and the spouse, health, the numerical values of the Ten Gods, the Useful Gods and the Five Factors.
      • Part IV — The Structures: the general method of interpretation, followed by the five structures (Resource, Parallel, Production, Wealth, Power).
      • Part V — Influence, Emptiness, Stars and Applications: the influence factor, emptiness, the branches of worry and the emotional branches, money, ‘backstabbers’, stars, changes and the fulfilment of the mandate.
      • Appendices: a Pinyin, Chinese and French glossary of the stems, branches, the Ten Gods and key terms.

The 20 diagrams from the course are retained, numbered and captioned.

      Why this handbook is useful

It brings order. Each concept is explained once, in its proper place, and then referred to subsequently. One follows the progression of the course, from the construction of the chart to the fulfilment of the mandate, without repetition or having to flip back and forth between scattered documents.

It links the different levels of interpretation. A BaZi theme can be interpreted on several levels: the elements, the Ten Gods, the palaces, the relationships between characters, and the timing of the pillars of fortune and the years. The manual demonstrates how these levels interrelate, particularly within the method of interpretation and in the fifth-year applications. It is this connection that enables the transition from rules to the reading of an actual chart.

It serves as a reference work. The table of contents is clickable, the chapters are numbered and the tables are easy to consult. In a matter of seconds, you can find the profile of a pillar of the day, the meaning of a deity in a palace or the effect of a clash, whether during a consultation or whilst revising.

It is comprehensive. The handbook retains all the information from the course: definitions, examples, tables, warnings and the teacher’s insights. The layout has been reorganised for greater clarity, but nothing has been removed from the content.

      What makes it valuable

Faithfulness to the teaching. The structure, order and progression of Serge Augier’s lectures are faithfully reproduced. The handbook is a working tool designed to support this teaching, not a personal rewriting.

A consistent reading experience. As no external sources are cited, the text remains focused on the course. The supplementary material enriches the subject matter—particularly regarding calculations and technical points that the course assumes are already known—and remains visually distinct from the course content itself.

Honesty towards the text. When two explanations differ, or when a passage in the course is unclear or contains an error, the handbook highlights this in an ‘Attention’ box rather than silently making a decision.

Consistent terminology. The names of the ten deities, the five factors, the stages and the relationships remain the same throughout, along with their Chinese and Pinyin equivalents. This is essential for learning without confusion.
