I present to you a comprehensive guide to the Yi Jing, the Book of Changes, written in French. It runs to just over a thousand pages and is based on a simple idea: that whoever opens it should need no other book to understand this work and put it into practice. Everything is explained in a self-contained manner, in clear language, without any jargon left unexplained, for beginners as well as more advanced practitioners.
It begins with the fundamentals. It covers the nature of the book, its history from the legendary times of Fu Xi right through to the major schools of interpretation, and then the philosophy underpinning it: the Dao, the transition from wuji to taiji, the interplay of yin and yang, the Hetu and the Luoshu. A lengthy section is devoted to the metaphysical path that makes the Yi Jing a teaching on the origin, evolution and place of humankind, and not merely a tool for divination. Next come the eight trigrams with all their correspondences, the arrangements of the Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven, the calendar, the celestial stems and terrestrial branches, the five elements, and finally the way in which a hexagram is constructed, with its six positions, its central lines, its correspondences and its hosts.
The manual is also aimed at those who wish to consult the oracle. It explains how to formulate a question, the right frame of mind with which to approach the oracle, how to cast a hexagram using three coins or yarrow stalks, based on a date, a name or other means, and, above all, how to interpret the answer, including the changing lines and the hexagram resulting from the change. The Plum Blossom method is explained step by step, with worked examples.
The core of the book consists of the sixty-four hexagrams. Each follows the same structure: an information sheet, the essentials in a few lines for a quick overview, the etymology of the name, an analysis of the structure, the Judgement, the Image and the traditional commentary, followed by the six lines one by one, with their text, explanation, practical advice and the hexagram to which they lead. A practical guide then offers insights for personal life, work, inner balance and choosing the right moment. The historical episodes referred to in the texts – notably the stories of King Wen, King Wu and the Duke of Zhou in their confrontation with the Shang dynasty – are recounted, bringing the lines to life far more effectively than a mere sequence of enigmatic maxims.
For those wishing to go further, a final section presents the Liu Yao, the six-line method of analysis based on the earthly branches, the six parents and the six animals. It is a highly precise tool for concrete questions, and the manual accompanies it with numerous annotated case studies where the reasoning is laid out step by step. It also includes the great cosmic cycles, the flying stars and comprehensive reference tables, including the eight palaces and their sixty-four hexagrams.
The value of this collection lies in its bringing together several ways of interpreting the I Ching that are usually kept separate: the philosophical and moral interpretation of the ancient texts, the symbolic interpretation through images and numbers, the Taoist tradition, divinatory practice and more technical methods. It can be read from start to finish as a course, or simply opened to the page corresponding to the hexagram obtained. It is available in two formats: an online version with a table of contents and search function, and a PDF version with a paginated table of contents, for study on screen or on paper. For anyone interested in Chinese thought, Taoist wisdom or the art of decision-making in the face of uncertainty, it is a reliable working companion, to be consulted year after year.
I ask 250€. More than 1000 pages
